  • Confidence with God, Arrogance with Self

What is the difference between confidence and arrogance? Too many times, these words can almost seem like synonyms. The main difference between these two words is whether or not humility is present. Confidence without humility is arrogance, and arrogance with humility is just confidence. So the real question is: what is humility? Society’s definition may be best described as knowing that you always have more to learn.

Another question I would have is: how would we define success in this life? I feel an appropriate definition would stem from what America has been about from the very beginning. The American Dream is seen as “more is better”: more money, more cars, a bigger house, more possessions. If we were to look at what truly gives life its meaning, we would have to look above, at what gave life in the first place. God’s definition of success boils down to this: complete obedience to Him and the ability to live life trusting God with everything you have and don’t have.

Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that we would be a slave to God—at least not how we as a society define that. Living life with complete obedience to God gives God the power to pave the road ahead of us, unraveling the story as it was supposed to be unraveled. It is our job in this world to simply enjoy the blessings God has put in our lives, no matter how big or small.

Now, what is God’s definition of humility? An understanding that everything is for and from God. If we have this understanding, then it will give us a different perspective on life. If arrogance is without humility, therefore forcing us to live life on our own accord and rely on our own power, then confidence in the Lord is as if God were walking life with us—but in front of us, with a tank, paving the way and destroying any evil that wishes to… no, dares to stand in our way.
